It Only Took 42 Hours!April 29, 2005 (3:31pm) - Titusville, FL - Report Submitted by Joe Hurston

42 hours from the time I boarded the SilkAir Flight in Medan, Sumatra until my daughter, Cherie picked me up at the Orlando International Airport, now that's a long flight.

After landing in Los Angeles, I phoned Cindy and said good morning. I thought it was 10:00am it was actually 10:00pm. My clock is a little wacky right now. Well, I tried to sleep a couple of hours before boarding my flight from LA to Orlando. The hotel kept shaking. I thought it was my imagination. It wasn't. There were mild earthquakes in LA that night.

Cindy and the kids and the Air Mobile team are all well! It's so good to be home. However, the images in my mind are fresh. The people of Indonesia are suffering so greatly. PLEASE remember to pray for them.

We, at Air Mobile, are more committed than ever to get back there with more Vortex Voyagers TM. Even as I write this "wrap up" report to you, Indonesia is still shaking. I just checked the www.usgs.gov and there was another earthquake (6.3) on Simeulue Island today. The earthquakes are far from finished. Our goal is to "pro-actively" place many Vortex Voyagers TM into the hands of the relief workers on the ground there. On this last journey, we made so many excellent contacts.

Finally, I want to say THANK YOU to all you who stood with us in prayer and support. As we formulate our plans for a return, I'll let you know. Don't hesitate to phone our office if you have any questions. Our number is: 321-267-7726. My personal cell phone number is: 321-544-7757. God Bless You and THANK YOU AGAIN!!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1114579888617075972005-04-27T01:12:00.000-07:002005-04-26T22:31:28.620-07:00No Re-Deployment Phone Calls - In Singapore Heading Home!!!April 27, 2005 (1:12pm) Singapore, Singapore - Report Submitted by Joe Hurston

As I boarded the SilkAir flite from Medan to Singapore, I made one last check of my "hand-phone" (that's what they call a cell phone in Sumatra). No last minute, urgent requests for clean water. I took a moment and thanked the Lord for a SUCCESSFUL MISSION! The plane roared toward Singapore. In a few hours, I board a Singapore Airlines flite for L.A. then jump a flite to Orlando and home!

Last night I did feel a bit of shaking in my hotel and found out there was a 5.3 just off the coast. A vivid reminder to pray for these precious people.

There's a real Dunkin Donuts at the Medan Airport. I had scheduled an early meeting there with one of the ministries that we are working with. While waiting, I met several other ministries that remembered us when we were here in January. They ran up to me and said, "the clean water man". After exchanging cards and promising to stay in touch I entered the airport. There I met the Auditor for Samaritan's Purse (SP), Ron. Ron and I flew from Meulaboh to Nias to Medan yesterday in the SP Cessna Caravan. On the first leg of our flite, Ron was "Co-Pilot". After landing in Nias, he gave up his seat in the cockpit and offered it to me. What a gentleman!

As I look back over this journey, so many faces and names and images come to mind. It will definately take me a while to sort it all out. I'm so glad for this "blog". It has really been a blessing to me to "download" the stuff we've been going through. It's been such a blessing having you with me in spirit and Prayer!! If nothing else exciting happens, the next communication will likely be from my office in Titusville, Florida (still a long way from here - more than 11,000 miles away). I guess I'd better go and check in with Singapore Airlines and confirm my seat. By the way, Singapore Airlines gave us incredible fares because we are working in the Relief effort in Sumatra. THANK YOU, SINGAPORE AIRLINES, you have invested in the work of the Lord!!

If you get a chance, please drop me note (joehurston@airmobile.org). I would love to hear from you! So long for now!!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1114514754054264882005-04-26T18:04:00.000-07:002005-04-26T04:52:21.953-07:00Samaritan's Purse To The Rescue!April 26, 2005 (6:04pm) - Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia - Report Submitted By Joe Hurston

Right after my midnight report, we did experience two quakes in our region. The storm continued for most of the night. Sleep was fitful and the shaking didn't help. I can only imagine what the thousands and thousands of survivors in this region sleeping in their tents must have been going through. Our Lord knows exactly where each one is and His eye is on them. We ask Him to pour out Grace, Protection and Comfort on them in this testing hour!

I awoke at sunrise and while sitting at my computer in the World Food Program (WFP)HQ and listening to the flight coordinators I knew that things were not going well. As the number of passengers quickly exceeded the available aircraft I knew that my chances of flying out on one of their aircraft today was very slim. I phoned Samaritan's Purse (SP) and the Program Manager, Doug, said that there was a mysterious name on the manifest and no one knew who it was. We laughed and said that the Lord had a seat for me! The plane was ready to leave and I had to dash to the airport, a 45 minute drive. In less than 5 minutes I was driving to the airport in a WFP vehicle. The aircraft, a beautiful Cessan Caravan was sitting on the ramp and the flight crew was waiting for me. A quick load and a smooth, short take-off from the damaged runway and off to Nias Island. We picked up 6 passengers and then on to Medan. The pilot, Steve, did a superb job and allowed me to sit in the cockpit of the Caravan. THANK YOU SP! Air Mobile needs a Caravan. Our work is so clearly before us and the Caravan is a great tool to accomplish so many missions.

Once in Medan, WFP quickly picked me up and apologized for the flight mix up. We were able to pump a lot of clean water through them and look forward to the opportunity to reach out to so many suffering people in cooperation with them.

Well, I'm definitely Homeward Bound. Just re-booked my flight to Singapore then Los Angeles. Sent an e-mail to Cherie asking her to take care of the L.A. to Orlando leg. Whew!! What a journey. Will meet with a couple of more ministries this evening and tomorrow morning, then leaving Sumatra for the time being.

I'll likely write you from Singapore as I'll have a couple of hours there before making the long flight over the water to L.A.

Again, I can't tell you what it means to have you standing with us as we reach out to these suffering people! This is what Jesus would have us to do and you're a serious part of it. God Bless You and THANKS AGAIN!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1114437345479607472005-04-26T00:50:00.000-07:002005-04-26T04:34:37.446-07:00A Dark & Stormy Night In Meulaboh!April 26, 2005 (12:50am) Meulaboh (MBO), Sumatra - Report Submitted by Joe Hurston

A good internet connection is a rare and wonderful thing in this devastated region. Thus this little update. There's a very violent thunder storm taking place at this time. I was just awakened by violent bursts of thunder that shook our whole house! Two things about that; first of all, when riding in the Russian M-8 "heli" with a couple of workers for CARE, they told me that when the 8.7 quake hit, and they were there, there was a violent thunderstorm. Hmm, I pray there's not another one. The other thing is; as we were making our approach into MBO, I saw again just how many thousands of people are living in tents on their land. Oh, it must be miserable for them. This is the rainy season. Very few things are as miserable as being in a tent in a violent thunderstorm. I know I keep saying it, but these precious people are going through so much. Please pray for the love of God to comfort them in this their most desperate hour. Everyday I get stories from folks who have just lost everything...everything. Yet, they manage to smile and even laugh a bit as they recount their amazing stories of survival. There are so many things that I want to share with you...

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my Pastor, Larry Linkous for loving me and my family. He's the best Pastor I've ever had! New Life Church is a great church and filled with praying people who just flat out love the Lord. It's so good knowing they're behind us! Thanks Pastor and New Life!!!

It's hard for me to sleep with these driving rains and violent, shaking thunder knowing how many people are out in this storm just trying to hold onto life. As you read this, please take a moment and lift them up! Well, I'd really better get to sleep, it's been a long day! Should I be fortunate to get out of MBO today, there's a 30+ hour trip ahead to get home. Love you all!! And thanks again!!!

Joe

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1114430605336215472005-04-25T18:51:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:19:13.050-07:00Back In Meulaboh From Simeulue on that Big Russian Chopper!April 25, 2005 - 6:51pm - Meulaboh, Sumatra - Report Submitted by Joe Hurston

Little delays add up; first the chopper landed on Simeulue Island about 35 minutes late. Then the loading took an extra 25 minutes. We flew from Simeulue to Meulaboh as fast that old chopper could go, but we landed 5 minutes after our connecting Twin Otter aircraft took off for Medan. Stuck in Meulaboh. Oh, well, that's not so bad. Came straight to the World Food Program (WFP) Office and asked for a place to lay my tired head. Gregory, the Program Manager graciously offered me a place to stay. The office also has a great internet connection.

On Friday, as our chopper approached Simeulue, the beauty of the island took my breath away with the coves and small islands and dense forest and breath-taking beaches. Yet, there has been so much suffering. The 8.7 quake did devastating damage. Over 80% of the structures either came down, or will have to be torn down. I went to a beach and viewed coral that would normally be 3-5 feet UNDER the water. It was actually ABOVE the surface! The earthquake up-heaval actually elevated the coastal area. That is why a ship recently struck the rocks while approaching Nias. The coastline has changed dramatically making sea-faring navigation difficult and dangerous.

The water situation on Simeulue is terrible. The local water lines have been severely damaged and will take a long time to repair. The wells have been damaged. The quakes have contaminated many of the wells. That was the situation I walked into upon arrival. The well for the WFP is right next to a bathroom. This is what the Vortex Voyager TM is designed for. I only had a single unit with me. Normally, it is preferable to deploy two Vortex Voyagers TM in such a case. We had donated all but one. The Vortex Voyager TM did great! I was able to train an Indonesian team on the operation and maintenance of the unit. They can now produce very clean water from very dirty water! Praise God!!

After pumping very clean water all day, I settled in to go over some photos taken by Cherie. I was really enjoying re-living our recent experiences. Suddenly I heard a terrible creaking noise and the earth began to move rapidly from side to side. The creaking noise was the house right next to our tent that no one walked into, as it was so severely damaged in the last quake. I stepped back in case the whole house came down. As quickly as the shaking began, it stopped. Another quake. Another experience. I knew that I would be leaving in a couple of days, but this is these peoples country. Their land, their home. My heart goes out to them. The Indonesian people are incredibly kind and brave.

Many have fled the coastal areas for the mountains. I was able to join an assessment team and go into, first the coastal region and see the abandoned houses. Then up into the mountains to see the fishermen and coastal dwellers in make-shift huts made out of sticks and bamboo trying to just live hour by hour. Yet, as we walked through these newly formed refugee villages, we were always greeted with a smile and kindness. Amazing people!! Yet, they wait for the next quake. And they come. Please remember these precious people in your prayer!

As I write this report, I hear the flight coordinators trying desperately to get all the people that need to get to Medan on airplanes. The problem is the runway has been severely damaged and only certain aircraft can make it into Meulaboh. Too many people, too few planes. My scheduling is in the Lord's hands! But I sure want to get home. I have no more Vortex Voyagers TM to deliver. My next goal is to get to Medan. Then, schedule the flight to Singapore, then L.A. etc. etc.. Eventually, I'll be home to Cindy and my kids! I want to say THANK YOU to all of you for your PRAYER! Also, thanks to the Cartridge Source Staff that serve so faithfully! I sure miss all of you. Hope to be home soon. Thanks for sticking with me on my wordy blogs. God Bless!!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1114251248144102782005-04-23T03:10:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:20:17.170-07:00A Phone Call in the Middle of the NightApril 23, 2005- Titusville, FL. 5:30 am-
Joe Hurston has just made contact with us through a satellite phone. He is in an area that is very primitive, but one where he is safe and doing exactly what he wants to- pumping water. The island of Simeulue is seriously in need of clean water. The one remaining Vortex Voyager TM carried by Joe has been working almost 24 hours a day! He will be leaving the island and making his way back to Medan. From there, we believe, he will make his way back to Singapore, then Taiwan, after that comes LA, and then finally there is Houston, then presto- Orlando. We are looking forward to having Joe back home with us but we are also extremely proud of the water work he is able to bless people with in the name of Christ. There is such a need for clean water. Thank you again for all your prayer. We know it works! Please continue to stand in agreement with us that God's will be done here on earth as it is in heaven! I had two fans blowing on me! That takes a little of the sting out of missing Cindy and my kids! This morning I was able to demo the Vortex Voyager TM to Gregory, the Director of the UN World Food Program (WFP)here in Meulaboh. The well here at WFP HQ was very bad. We set up the Vortex Voyager TM in less than 5 minutes and pumped very clean water. All were impressed!

Samaritan's Purse (SP) has offered to loan me an extra Vortex Voyager TM to bring to Simeulue. This will double my capacity as well as give redundancy in the operation. Last night I went to the SP office and cleaned and upgraded the unit that I had left with them just after the tsunami. The Vortex Voyager TM is now functioning perfectly. I was also able to train several key staff members including a young man named Adrian. His father, Ed, is the flight director for Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF). MAF and I go way back. We've worked around the world on many projects. Again, I never cease to marvel at the fact that "The Lord knows how to deploy His troops". It's so wonderful to be at the right place at the right time.

Just checking quakes, by the way, you may go to: www.usgs.gov and go to Recent quakes - then quakes worldwide for the latest quake activity. There was a 5.9 on Guam. None in our neck of the woods during the last 24 hours.

As I mentioned earlier, this may be the last communication until I return from Simeulue, but...you never know. We've gotten Internet connections in places that you would never dream would be connected. So be sure to check the website blog regularly. Now you know what I am going to ask for....PRAYER! Your prayer is so precious and it really works. Please keep it up. God Bless You all and THANK YOU for standing with us. Got to load up my gear and go catch a chopper for Simeulue. Love you!!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1114066153776123472005-04-21T14:15:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:24:21.320-07:00Safe & Sound In MeulabohApril 21, 2005 (2:17pm) Meulaboh, Sumatra - Report submitted by Joe Hurston

Cindy and the rest of the Air Mobile Team arrived safely home! Thank the Lord!!

I left on schedule for Meulaboh (MBO). As the Twin-Otter (airplane) touched down on the damaged runway and made a quick stop, I knew the drive into downtown MBO would be difficult. As we drove by the prison, the thought of no survivors hit me. Each inmate, no matter what the crime, received the death sentence delivered by the tsunami. The idea of being behind bars, less than a quarter mile from the ocean is terrible. Of course every prisoner perished as did the guards/staff/visitors.

Rebuilding is slow. Small houses (mostly shacks) are popping up made out of the debris wood and old tin. Many, many tents. This area is still shaking. There have been heavy rains. You can see the discouragement and despair everywhere. Yet, these precious people always manage to smile. I've learned a few Indonesian words. It's nice to be able to communicate.

Tomorrow I leave for Simeulue (I had been misspelling it). It's a small island north of Nias. It had a small quake yesterday. The U.N. has put me up and yes, they do have internet, thus this blog. We are very excited about the fact that the U.N. is interested in the Vortex Voyager TM. The idea that "First Responders" world-wide would have the ability to purify water immediately after a disaster is very rewarding. The Lord cares for people and sees every suffering one. We can do something to relieve that suffering. That's being obedient to Jesus.

Later this afternoon I'll meet with the Samaritan Purse Rep. After the tsunami, Air Mobile donated a Vortex Voyager TM to them. I have some upgrade modifications that will make their unit work better. It's amazing that we can communicate as well as we do. We've been successful in upgrading many of the units that we brought in last time. It's good to meet with the workers. So many good people are over here. I count myself so blessed to be here! The U.N. staff has been very courteous and kind to me. God Bless them!

I'll probably get another blog off tomorrow morning before departure. I know I thank you all for your prayer each time, but I can't tell you what it means to know that people are praying for us. THANK YOU again.

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1114001752208733482005-04-20T21:48:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:25:35.373-07:00Back In Medan!April 20, 2005 (8:49pm) - Medan, Sumatra - Report Submitted by Joe Hurston

Good flight from Singapore back to Medan. Just found out that Cindy and the team landed in LA and will be home by this evening. I miss them!

Just received my flight schedule. Depart Medan for Meulaboh in the morning. Meulaboh was the town we went to just after the tsunami. It will be good to get back. Though the memories are haunting. Never have I seen such destruction. I laughed and said, "no one sleeps in concrete structures on Nias". Well, since those words there was another quake, this one, a 5.2, earlier there was a 5.1. We all sense that these quakes are far from over. Please remember to pray for a successful mission. It's late, I'm tired and must get to sleep for an early departure. Remember, I'll likely be out of touch for the next couple of days.

God Bless!! Jot a note when you get a chance.

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113904009241244422005-04-19T17:33:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:26:54.890-07:00While Boading Our Flight for Singapore......April 19, 2005 (5:35pm) - Singapore - Report submitted by Joe Hurston

We were all in the "Get Home" mode when my cell phone went off in the terminal building in Medan just prior to departure. The call was from the U.N. Remember a couple of days ago, the U.N. gave us a "Heli" lift to one of the sunken villages? Well, they saw the Vortex Voyagers TM. Word spread and the call was for an urgent need for a Vortex Voyager TM back on Nias. Cindy and I looked at each other and we both knew that I would bring in a Vortex Voyager TM. We both remembered that we had left one unit on Singapore for a later deployment. Here was the need! I flew with Cindy and the rest of the team to Singapore. Made arrangements for a return flite to Medan, Indonesia and sadly watched Cindy, Ben, Cherie, Angelica, Barbara and Chris head for the long flight home. I've checked into the hotel at the airport and tomorrow morning will head back to Medan then to Nias island. We're really honored that the urgent request came through and that we were able to respond so quickly. We know the conditions on Nias are dreadful. After just a couple of hours of trudging through the rice paddies and trekking into villages heat exhaustion/stroke can quickly set in. This is exactly what the Vortex Voyager TM was designed for. Of course, once on the island, it's nearly impossible to get any communications out. Please remember to pray for the Air Mobile Team heading home and for me as I return to the "battle". Will write when I can. GOD BLESS YOU ALL and THANKS again for your prayer.

Joe

PS - Cherie was able to download a lot of shots. Upon returning, she'll get them up on the web as quickly as possible. We're all just beat. This had been an incredible journey. We've seen a lot of suffering. Been pretty scared at times (with all the shaking going on), pumped clean water for thirsty people. We've experienced the love of God and His mercy and protection in awesome ways. Tomorrow morning we board our flight for Singapore then back to the U.S.

I only have a minute before my time runs out on this borrowed computer. Again, THANK YOU all for praying for us. We'll write a bit more from Singapore. We love you!!

Joe and the Air Mobile TeamAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113758393299365302005-04-17T22:38:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:28:15.446-07:00We Feel The Earth Move!Sebolga, Sumatra, Indonesia - April 17, 2005 10:38PM - Report Submitted by Joe Hurston

Our ship just docked in Sebolga after departing Nias this afternoon. We made it to Nias on Friday afternoon. It took four different flites to get the Air Mobile Team and equipment (8 Vortex Voyagers TM) to Nias. Since our last report so much has happened. Yesterday morning went by U.N. helicopter to search for and evaluate the needs of a village that was reported to have sunk! Hiked, fully loaded through rice paddies and thick jungle (with a lot of mud and muck). We found a sunken village. Were pleased that it had a good source of water (a sweet well), but most were living in tents and under constant fear of the next quake.

Then in the early hours of this morning (12:42am April 17th) another strong quake happened. We were in tents just like most of the residents of Nias. It was very scary. The quake occurred about 60 miles from where we were and was felt as far away as Hong Kong. Moments after the quake, we were anticipating a tsunami. The community that we were in was clearly emotionally shaken, but there was a strong faith in the Lord. Nias has a high percentage of Christians. The atmosphere of faith and love was incredible. We now have such a clear understanding of what these precious people are going through. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries from the quake!

The damage done on Nias by the March 27th 8.7 quake was horrible. As we surveyed the area we could hardly believe what we saw. We'll have some photos up on our webpage later. Suffice it to say, we were all shaken ourselves.

We delivered the Vortex Voyagers TM into some wonderful hands. The Pastor of Bethany Church (spelled in English) was happy for his people. While part of the Air Mobile Team was out looking for the sunken village, the other part pumped hundreds of gallons of clean water to thankful residents. This morning we boarded a ship to bring us back to the mainland. It was an 8 hour trip. Tomorrow we travel overland to Medan. After some wrap-up meetings in Medan and the delivery of the remaining Voyagers TM, we'll begin our long journey home.

We're all tired and I'll close out this report. THANK YOU all for your prayer and love. Believe me, on Saturday night when that earthquake shook us out of our tents, we were thankful for people back home PRAYING! By the way, we're in the area where a couple of volcanos have come to life. We're definitely not out of the woods yet. We'll depart for the U.S. by way of Singapore on Tuesday (April 19th).

Joe & The Air Mobile TeamAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113480946995409772005-04-14T19:02:00.000-07:002005-04-14T05:15:46.996-07:00"Hot Spot"Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia - April 14, 2005 (7:04pm) - Report Submitted by: Joe Hurston

No flight to Nias today for us due to scheduling complications beyond our control. That's pretty close to Nias Island. The area is called the "Ring of Fire" and with good reason. This activity is unprecedented. Things are definitely heating up and shaking!

Upon arrival at the Medan airport, I sent the team back to the Novotel Hotel and Ben (my son) and I went to the military side of the airfield. We're cleared! The Air Mobile Team will be boarding a U.N. Helicopter for Nias at 7:00am tomorrow morning. The Lord is truly opening the way for us to get to ground zero of this latest disaster. We have been longing to get onto Nias, but have at the same time been following the steps laid out before us. We have been praying for strategic deployment. Yesterday as we pumped clean water in that refugee area where over 50,000 people died, we knew that we were right on schedule, in the right place at the right time. We sense the same thing about the course that we are on.

We're packing full camping supplies and will likely be in tents on Nias. We don't know where we will stay or how we will get around, but we have been assured that if we show up with the Vortex Voyagers TM there will be plenty of work for us to do. So "onward we march"!

As we look at these eruptions, we just might take a trip down that way, but again, the Lord will have to open the doors. With all the disaster going on it's not like just jumping a flight, or getting in your car and driving there. Each step really takes the Lord to open the doors. Well, I'd better not get too far ahead of schedule. We have Nias next. It's unlikely that we'll be able to communicate from there, but you never know. We've seen "connections" in some very strange places. If you don't hear from us for a couple of days, it's because we're just out of the communication line. The Air Mobile Team is healthy and we're getting along quite well. The Lord is good!!

It's that time to close this out. THANK YOU for your love and prayer!!

Joe and the Air Mobile Team!

PS - I may get one more off before we turn in tonight. Love you all!!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113355951187989352005-04-13T08:07:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:31:42.263-07:00Pumping Clean Water in Banda Aceh!April 13, 2005 (8:10am)- Banda Aceh - Report Submitted by Joe Hurston - President - Air Mobile Ministries

Yesterday was incredible. We went back to Maraxha and found a couple of wells that were too salty to pump from. We then found a well that was within limits and we spent several hours just pumping water and visiting with the people. After lunch we headed back out to a refugee area (Lambada) that had been visited just after the tsunami by Scot Law of World Compassion. It was great watching Scot meet again with these precious people that have lost so much. They were just blessed that he returned! What a joy. It took testing 5 wells before we found one that had an acceptable level of salt (all of the wells are salty, just some more than others). The people were just so happy that we could take their water and make it safe to drink. The scene after several hours of pumping clean water was beyond words for me. The sun was setting through the palm trees, houses all around us had been severely damaged. The people mulled around the well and the three Vortex Voyagers TM just pumping clean water. There was laughter and joy. For this time, these precious people were distracted from the most devasting disaster in modern history. Our team just shined the love of the Lord. This is why we came here.

Today, we're leaving Banda Aceh and leaving Scot and his Indonesian associate Hanny behind (Hanny is a great blessing and will be joining us on Nias). They'll be going back into refugee areas and placing the units that World Compassion has funded. He had donated 4 units to Jeff Hammond and Bless Indonesia Today (BIT). BIT will be deploying the units with his mobile medical teams. Good seed in good soil!

We'll fly back to Medan this morning and hopefully secure our helicopter flight into Nias. Yesterday, while approaching Nias, a cargo ship crashed on the rocks and broke up. The harbors have changed since the tsunami and earthquake and navigation is trecherous. That is the reason we're holding out for the chopper ride. The problem is- so is everyone else! We've already met with the authorities that determine who goes. They are very eager for us to get into Nias and bring water. Yesterday, it was reported that 42 earthquake survivors died in refugee clinics on south Nias due to lack to medical care/supplies. The area has been devastated, roads are unpassable and mud slides have occured. We envision using motorcycles to pass "unpassable" roads and bring Vortex Voyagers TM into the most difficult and desperate areas. This will be our greatest test.

Meanwhile.....earthquakes are popping everyday. On Monday Nias and the surrounding area had 5, the strongest being a 6.7. We felt one here in Banda Aceh yesterday. Please remember to pray for us as we go into these areas. We simply want to be "in the right place at the right time"!

Again, thank you for your love and prayer and support!!

Joe and the Air Mobile TeamAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113266475851044892005-04-12T07:40:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:33:03.530-07:00The Team is in Banda Aceh!April 12, 2005 (7:20am) - Banda Aceh, Sumatra - Report submitted by: Joe Hurston

Our flight from Medan to Banda Aceh was bumpy and the landing in the Boeing 737-400 was one of the roughest I have ever encountered. I thought the landing gear had been damaged. Welcome to Banda Aceh!

The quakes are popping like crazy in the region. There were about 4 yesterday on Monday, the strongest being 6.7. Immediately upon arrival, our host, Jeff Hammond of Bless Indonesia Today brought us to meet the Mayor of Banda Aceh. Cherie and I demonstrated the Vortex Voyager TM. He expressed extreme thanks for our care for his people. He lost numerous memembers of his family. We prayed for him. There is not a single person that we have encountered that has not had major losses. Yet, the people manage to smile and across the board, express thanks for our coming! We must do all we can to help them.

We then drove through Meuraxa, the region that you likely have all seen. This is a small region on the northwest side of Banda Aceh that lost 50,000 people! We were driven through the area by the regional mayor. He lost his wife, his 4 children over 200 members of his family, his home and his entire region of responsibility! His courage was astounding! There is so much more that I want to say about all of this but time won't allow me. Even today, the destruction is inconceivable. We saw tents popping up everywhere with families returning to their property, attempting to re-stake their claim. It's sad to see them living in such conditions with a total reminder of the tsunami everywhere. The smell is still pungent in regions. There are over 135,000 unaccounted for bodies. The atmosphere is like none other we have experienced. Yet, in the midst of it, Bless Indonesia Today (BIT) has raised it's flags all over the region. There is new construction of clinics and HOPE. We're the blessed ones to be working with such a ministry.

We'll pump water today! We did pump a little water next to the famous Mosque that you may have seen as the only surviving structure after the tsunami hit this region. It was quite damaged, but still standing. We pumped water from a well that was quite salty, but still to acceptable levels (about 400 parts per million). We only pumped a little while. Today, we'll find some better wells and pump for the community. At the same time, we'll train our Indonesian counterparts on the operation.

Well, I typed this to you during breakfast. We only have one line and computer. So, I'd better run. I'll try to communicate this evening. Please continue to pray for our team as we shake and rattle through this region. We love you all!!

Joe and the Air Mobile TeamAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113180083807469782005-04-11T07:31:00.000-07:002005-04-10T17:41:23.806-07:00Another Quake on Sunday!April 11, 2005 (7:35am) Medan, Sumatra - Report submitted by Joe Hurston - President Air Mobile

After our last report yesterday (Sunday) there were another series of earthquakes off shore between Nias and Padang. Padang is one of the towns we hope to visit later this week. The main quake measured 6.8. There is great fear of another tsunami. We find ourselves praying so diligently for these precious people that just keep getting shock after shock. It's hard to imagine how much suffering they must be going through. We're determined to get as close to the suffering people as possible and bring some relief. A cup of water in such a situation can go a long way toward letting these people know that Jesus loves them!!

In a few hours we'll be boarding an aircraft for Banda Aceh, the town that lost the most people in the December 26th tsunmai. Over 100,000 died in this city. We'll be going to the areas that have been absolutely flattened by the tsunami. We have reports that the survivors are determined to get back to their property, regardless of the situation. The need for water is great. We'll attempt to write from there. I've got to go for now. God Bless each and every one of you. Thanks for your prayer and support and love!!

Joe and the Air Mobile Team.Air Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113134120954341082005-04-10T04:39:00.000-07:002005-04-10T04:55:20.956-07:00The "Fluid" Nature of a DisasterApril 10, 2005 (6:42pm) - Medan, Sumatra - Report filed by Joe Hurston
The church in downtown Medan was packed. Service was in the Indonesian language. The Spirit in the church was sweet. My son, Ben and I headed out early to pick up Scot Law with World Compassion. After getting checked in and final documents completed we headed back to the airport to submit our flight request for the lift to Nias Island. We found out that the Singapore Armed Forces are pulling out tomorrow. We don't know who or how we will get to Nias on Thursday. We trust our Lord will make a way. Meanwhile, our flight into Banda Aceh is on for tomorrow. We will be there from Monday until Wednesday. We'll find out about the way into Nias upon our return. As I said, it's a fluid situation.

We may not be able to communicate while in Banda Aceh. If you don't get any updates, it's most likely due to lack of internet access.

The earthquakes on Nias have slowed down. There was only one 6.0 quake on Saturday and none reported thus far today (Sunday). There is great fear of another large quake and tsunami on Nias and the government officials are trying to urge the residents to remain calm. Please pray for peace and protection for Nias.

Thanks again for your prayer!! Until next time.....

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113098265672825052005-04-09T18:47:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:34:39.663-07:00Heading To Church in MedanApril 10, 2005 (8:45am local) - Medan, Sumatra - Quick report by Joe

We're heading to church in just a few minutes, so this morning's report will be brief. Yesterday was very successful. We're flying into Banda Aceh on Monday morning. We'll spend two days there. Then back to Medan to replenish our supplies/ Vortex Voyagers TM and to Nias Island onboard a Singaporian Chinook (CH-47) helicopter. We'll spend a couple of days there and back to Medan to replenish supplies. Then to Meulaboh on a Samaritan Purse Cessna Caravan. We'll spend a couple of days there and hopefully work up the coast toward Banda reaching very isolated locations. Now, this is our plan and it is subject to change. We seek His guidance each step (baby steps included). Again, all of you have helped us to get here!! THANK YOU!

Just a quick added note, we're picking up Scot Law with World Compassion out of Tulsa this morning (just after church). Scot will be joining us in Banda Aceh. His ministry funded 15 Vortex Voyagers TM! God Bless World Compassion and their generous donors!! Our taxi has just arrived to bring us to church. I'll attempt to send another quick update this afternoon (local time). Our clocks are still turned upside down, but we're beginning to get used to the 12 hour time difference. The whole Air Mobile team sends their love!!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1113015230269902222005-04-09T09:58:00.000-07:002005-04-08T19:58:14.760-07:00The Air Mobile Team - Ready for Deployment!April 9, 2005 (9:45 am local time) - Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia - Report submitted by Joe Hurston - President - Air Mobile

There's a whole lot of shaking going on! Yesterday, Nias Island had 3 earthquakes; a 5.5 / 5.6 / 6.0 magnitude. We can only imagine what the residents are going through. Their nerves must be shot. Please remember to pray for them!

I was able to get a "sim" card for my phone turning it into an Indonesian cell phone or "hand-phone" as they call it here. This has made it much easier to contact some of the other relief organizations here. We've made successful contact with several already this morning. We're heading over to the airport to work on securing "lifts" to the multiple affected areas, Nias, Banda Aceh and Meulaboh. Please remember to pray for the Air Mobile team that we are in the "right place at the right time"!

We really appreciate each of you. Thank you standing with and praying with us on this mission!

JoeAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1112945282286231492005-04-08T00:14:00.000-07:002006-08-24T12:36:31.023-07:00The Air Mobile Team is in Indonesia!April 8, 2005 - Medan, Sumatra - The Air Mobile Team is in Indonesia. We've just checked into our hotel (The Novotel Hotel). We have sent messages to a number of relief organizations who have requested our assistance with the Vortex Voyagers TM letting them know that we're here and ready to go!

We just received news that there were two earthquakes on Nias island this morning. No damage, but certainly rattling nerves. Our heart goes out to the people of Nias. We are eager to get over to help.

I just met moments ago with a flight crew of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). They are flying Chinook helicopters (CH-47's). We're hoping to get a lift over to Nias with them. The last time we were here in January, the SAF was INCREDIBLE! The provided vital flight support to our team. We're thankful that they are back. We'll let you know how things work out.

The Air Mobile Team composed of Cindy Hurston, Cherie Hurston, Anelica Hurston, Ben Hurston, Barbara Walker, Chris Stamper and me, Joe Hurston send our greetings and love. As always, we need your prayer! If you get a chance, drop us a note via: contact@airmobile.org. We'll try to respond. Once we get on Nias (or wherever the Lord puts us), communications will become sketchy at best.

Until next time.....

Joe Hurston
President - Air MobileAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11755039.post-1112824542917822982005-04-06T14:54:00.000-07:002005-04-06T14:55:42.920-07:00Hello From SingaporeApril 7, 2005 - Singapore International Airport - After 24 hours of flying, we're almost there. We arrived into Singapore at 1:30am local time. We're awaiting the ticket counter to open and we'll pre-check our 24 Vortex Voyagers. All of our internal time clocks are turned upside down. It's a 12 hour time difference. We opted to spend a full day here in Singapore before launching into the relief effort. Tonight we'll have dinner with a Major from the Singapore Armed Forces. He was very helpful in the relief effort in Meulaboh, Indonesia when we were bringing relief to the tsunami victims. We would like to thank both Singapore Airlines for an excellent flight as well as special consideration on our airfares for the relief work we are doing. Also, the Singapore government and specifically the Singapore Armed Forces were FANTASTIC during the tsunami. They provided the helicopter transportation to "ground zero", Meulaboh, after the tsunami. We're so thankful for so many people who care for others!

Tomorrow, we head to Medan, Indonesia. It's only an hour flight, just a short hop after crossing
the Pacific Ocean. The team will travel from Singapore to Medan, Indonesia via. Singapore Airlines. The team will arrive at Medan on April 8, 2005. The team is going to do all in its power to get to Nias as soon as possible.

April 5, 2005 - From Joe Hurston at 1:15pm (pst) at Los Angeles Airport: There was another 5.5. magnatude earthquake in Banda Aceh this morning. The whole region is incredibly unstable. There have been more than 700 after-shock tremors since the 8.7 magnitude quake of March 28th. The timeliness of our journey is incredible. We count it such a privilege to be able to bring in desperately needed water purification units in such a time of need. So many of you have given us the funds and prayed thus enabling us to go and deliver clean water to thirsty people!! Thanks!!

Please remember to pray for us that we will be in the "right place at the right time"! Also, pray for the precious people of Indonesia. There was another 5.6 earthquake. The conditions there sound chaotic. Each rumble causes panic and fear. There is talk about another major quake to come soon. The residents of the earthquake area don't know what each quake will bring. There is a dire need for drinking water. We knew that would be the case.

We've modified our plans to get onto Nias as quickly as possible. We've heard back from some the workers there and are being assured we'll get transportation to Nias because of our cargo - Vortex Voyagers. Our team is gathering in Orlando and we're packing the 24 Vortex Voyagers on Sunday. There is a tremendous sense of mission and purpose.

Our accomodations had been set in Banda Aceh. Now, we're going to head straight to Nias. I realized this morning that we needed a generator to handle potentially primitive conditions on Nias. I called a Pastor friend, Evelio Quintero in Orlando. He immediately found a neat 1000 watt Honda generator for about $300 less than I could get it. Within two hours I picked it up at his church. The ladies of the church were having a meeting. They took an offering and sent me on my way. Wow, the day started with a plan to go buy a generator. Within a couple of hours we had one donated, a $450 offering and Evelio and I had lunch! The Lord has a way of just blessing!!

THANK YOU for your prayers!

Joe HurstonAir Mobile Ministrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15450342091704397545noreply@blogger.com0
